Zero electron kinetic energy and photoelectron spectroscopy of the XeI anion

چکیده
The XeI anion and the corresponding neutral X1/2, I3/2, and II1/2 electronic states have been studied by means of zero electron kinetic energy ~ZEKE! and photoelectron spectroscopy. The ZEKE spectra show rich and well-resolved progressions in the low-frequency vibrations of the anion and the neutral van der Waals complexes. From our spectroscopic data we construct model potentials for the anion and three neutral states, which are compared to previously obtained potential functions for this system. The intensity of the I3/2←anion transitions relative to the X1/2 ←anion transitions in the XeI ZEKE spectrum is considerably lower than expected from a Franck-Condon simulation based on the model potentials. Comparison with the photoelectron spectrum of XeI indicates this is due to a small s-wave partial cross section for photodetachment to the I3/2 state. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~98!00148-2#

Slow electron velocity-map imaging of negative ions: applications to spectroscopy and dynamics.
Anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has become one of the most versatile techniques in chemical physics. This article briefly reviews the history of anion PES and some of its applications. It describes efforts to improve the resolution of this technique, including anion zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) and the recently developed method of slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI). Applica...
متن کاملMass Selected ZEKE-Spectra of FeC2-Anions: A Spectroscopic Access to Intermediates in Catalytic Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Metal Surfaces
Zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectra of metalcarbide anions are presented, allowing a high resolu tion spectroscopic access to intermediates in catalytic reac tions of hydrocarbons on metal surfaces. As a first compound, FeC2 (an intermediate of the iron/acetylene system) has been chosen. Important for successful ZEKE spectroscopy was a special anion source and the selection by ti...
متن کاملVibronic structure in C2H and C2D from anion slow electron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy.
The C2H and C2D radicals are investigated by slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) of the corresponding anions. This technique offers considerably higher resolution (<0.5 meV) than photoelectron spectroscopy. As a result, SEVI spectra of the two isotopomers yield improved electron affinities and reveal many new structures that are particularly sensitive to vibronic coupling between the grou...
متن کاملCommunication: Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) anion and accurate determination of the electron affinity of TCNQ.
Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) is widely used as an electron acceptor to form highly conducting organic charge-transfer solids. Surprisingly, the electron affinity (EA) of TCNQ is not well known and has never been directly measured. Here, we report vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) of the TCNQ(-) anion produced using electrospray and cooled in a cryogenic ion trap. Photoe...
متن کاملTetracoordinated Planar Carbon in the Al4C Anion. A Combined Photoelectron Spectroscopy and ab Initio Study
The chemical structure and bonding of Al4C and Al4C have been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. While Al4C is known to be a tetrahedral molecule, the data reported here suggest that Al4C has D4h symmetry (when averaged over zero-point vibrational motions) and thus is the smallest species identified to date that contains a tetracoordinated planar carbon atom. The ...
